Fine Dining in Edmonton

Tuesday, January 27th, 2015

Edmonton Fine DiningEdmonton’s food scene is growing and getting noticed, with fantastic new restaurants and dining experiences appearing within our city every year. Avenue Edmonton runs a “Best Restaurants” list every year (check out the one from March 2014 to see their most recent top picks) and dining hot spots in our city are also appearing more regularly on Canada-wide lists.

We’ve assembled our own list of some of the best dining and food experiences in Edmonton, which we feel includes the best of the best. Have you experienced all of these restaurants? If not, definitely consider making a reservation. You won’t regret it!

10643 123 Street,

The menu is small but fantastic, and rotates regularly with the seasons. RGE RD takes authentic farm-style dinners and elevates them with delicious flavours, elegant plating, and an excellent serving staff. From award-wining chef Blair Lebsack and partner Caitlin Fulton.

Corso 32

10345 Jasper Avenue,

You’ll need to make a reservation several weeks in advance: That’s how popular – and amazing – Corso 32 is. Their space is small and intimate, while their dishes are to die for. This lovely corner of downtown lives up to the hype and creates a truly excellent dining experience, from the delicious food right through to the dedicated service.

Cibo Bistro

11244 104 Avenue,

An inventive Italian restaurant few people know about, this lesser-known diamond features a mouthwater, Italian-inspired seasonal menu and in-house made pasta. The chef, Rosario Caputo, is a master of blending old-world traditions and modern dishes for a truly unique experience.

2 Sir Winston Churchill Square,

With a focus on simple elegance and sourcing local artisan food, Zinc is a magical place for a lunch, dinner, or after-dinner drink. Located within the Art Gallery of Alberta, their menu changes often and is regularly inspired by featured art exhibits. Chef David Omar combines flavour and elegance in a stand-out menu.

Hardware Grill

9698 Jasper Avenue,

Chef Larry Stewart blends classical cooking with whimsy and contemporary highlights, which creates a series of pleasant – and delicious – surprises throughout your meal. Everything is prepared in house, including breads, sausages, and reductions, and the ingredients are thoughtfully sourced from the best providers.

Duchess Bake Shop

10718 124 Street,

Not a full restaurant, but rather a french-style pastry shop and cafe with a large and glorious selection of pastries and desserts that will make your mouth sing. They prepare everything daily and from scratch. The best in fine pastry that Edmonton has to offer.

Christmas Gadgets for the Discerning Receiver

Hovercraft Golf Cart

It might look like a joke (or a viral video), but this really happens

So what do you get the person who has everything?

Well, for most men, the answer is easy: The newest gadgets on the market!

For years, the quickest way to a man’s heart has been through the electronics, but the same can now be said of many women. The trend for Christmas gadgetry is said to be closer among the sexes than it has ever been.

Some credit cell phones, while others credit the more mobile lifestyle people are leading and the comfort of everyday use of technology (which can be traced back to desktop machines and computing). Either way, what’s becoming a safe zone for the guy or gal who has it all is the latest outcrop of tech.

So what are some of the best items to get out there?

The Best Mirrorless Camera on the Market

Fujifilm X-T1 Digital CameraPeople love digital cameras. They’re light, fast, easy to process (upload to phone/computer) and they take excellent pictures. But they can be a little bulky. Another thing to have to carry around with you.

Fujifilm created a camera that helps to challenge these issues. The Fujifilm XT-1 has been called “the greatest camera on the market” for its weather-sealed retro design, amazing controls (in particular manual options) small size and weight, and excellent picture quality. People have claimed that their best images don’t come from DSLR cameras used by many professionals. Instead they brag about using mirrorless because the technology has come so far. Most major electronics brands will not cover a specialty product like this, but you will be able to order it through camera stores like MacBain Camera.

Approx $1800US

Proform TDF Centennial Fitness Cycle with App

Google Powered Fitness CycleTraining products are an easy Christmas present, though they can send the wrong message to anyone who hasn’t told you that they want to work out. That mixed message could be made easier with this stationary bike that offers a visual trip powered by Google—you get to program the location and distance of your training and it gives you a Google street view of the trip, complete with hill resistance. Ambitious riders can do lags of the Tour de France, but don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Approx $1995.00US
Mobile App $99/year

VPI Prime

VPI Prime TurntableIt might seem hard to believe, but New Jersey is where the world’s best sound comes from. Forget The Boss or Bon Jovi, we’re thinking VPI. Since the days of Ronald Reagan, vinyl lovers and audiophiles have flocked to the world’s best audio listening manufacturers. VPI’s Prime series turntables have dominated the market for their quality of sound, excellent flatness (the reproduction of the original sound without adding anything to it) and low wow and flutter. The design aesthetic has stayed modern and contemporary, making it as much a conversation piece as it is fine audio tool for enjoying one’s favourite recordings. Most of the parts are sourced locally in the US, and the tone arms are designed and 3D printed in house, ensuring absolute engineering perfection.

Approx $3500

Mathusalem Champagne Saber

Mathusalem Champagne SabreOkay, so if your wife, husband, boyfriend or girlfriend has everything under the sun, this is the gift for you to consider.

Champagne sabers are one of those party favours that only make it out on one holiday of the year, but for the right socialite, they can make their year start gingerly.

People who entertain a lot will love the extravagance and showmanship that comes with perfecting the use of a champagne sabre, and the gilding of the Mathusalem conjures Napoleonic proportion images of conquest, pomp and regalia.

Just remember to practice your bottle opening skills before exhibiting to any excited guests on NYE. Messing up the Mathusalem’s maiden voyage could make for a long year.

Approx $500US

Neoteric Hovercraft

Neoteric HovercraftFor decades, Neoteric has been building hovercrafts for recreational and emergency rescue. They launched a family of products specifically for the recreational user. For just about 60 grand US, golfers will be able to cruise up to 50mph on water, land, sand or just about anything without damaging natural areas. What’s most impressive are the brakes. It stops on a dime and pivots while driving in a straight line, so there are million ways to freestyle in the wilderness, where no one will see you, and you won’t leave any tracks behind you.

Approx $65,000US (with accessories).

So for the people who have everything, here are but 5 options that will give a few good ideas.

And if you have any questions or would like to talk about your home or property investments and what options might be available, send us a note. We’d be happy to have a conversation to see if we might be able to help.

The Fairmont Hotel MacDonald, a great stay-cation option! Photo Credit: Gensphoto

Edmonton is a city that has something for everyone. For families seeking an active lifestyle, Edmonton has limitless options. For people fond of history, archeology, science or sport, it’s got that, too.

But our city has done a lot of maturing these last few years, and one area that has exploded in the last decade is the luxury lifestyle sector. We’ve watched as new and interesting environments for play, shopping and dining have cropped up throughout the city.

So the Paranych Luxury Team has put their heads together to think up the top 5 luxurious things we like to do in Edmonton for those people eager for the a taste of what Edmonton’s upscale lifestyle might offer them.

1. Accommodations – The Fairmont MacDonald Hotel 10065 100 St NW, Edmonton

The ‘Hotel Mac’ is one of western Canada’s most recognizable landmarks. Nestled on the edge of Edmonton’s River Valley, its visual importance is only bested by its historical importance. From dining to events and conferences, to luxurious spas and patio cocktails, the MacDonald Hotel is and Edmonton luxury mainstay.

2. Dining – Zinc Restaurant, 99 Street and 102 Avenue.

Zinc’s modern look and sophisticated menu will appeal to many luxury diners. But the view can also be interesting, as the two-storey windows overlook the Winspear Centre. It’s easy to catch a glimpse of the crowd as they make their way to the Symphony. Their wine collection is impressive and their seasonal seven-course meal is a city highlight.

3. Shopping – Simons (for him and her), West Edmonton Mall, Edmonton

Simons brings a piece of belle Montreal to Edmonton. Featuring exquisite fashions for men and women (priced from moderate to luxury), Simons offers Edmonton high fashion flavour that’s as flexible as you want to be.

4. Driving – October 15th Luxury Test Drive and Networking, Institute of Chartered Accountants, Lexus South Pointe, 100 St. SW

Accountants and their many colleagues will dine and network, testing out the best that Lexus can provide. Events like this go on throughout the year in Edmonton, so it’s good to keep an eye out for the group that best suits your profession!

5. Viewing – Columbia Ice Field and Glacier Walk, Rocky Mountains, Alberta

Yes, it’s not exactly luxury (at $109/person, it’s quite affordable), and it’s certainly not in Edmonton. But this is a once in a lifetime experience. Walking the glaciers in the Rockies is as Albertan as you can get. It’s a three-hour drive west, but the anticipation will make the viewing and learning experience unforgettable.

Edmonton has a lot more going on than we’ve listed, and we encourage you to look around and get a sense of what’s out there. You can find reviews and tidbits about events in magazines like Avenue Edmonton.

Either way, we wish you the best of luck with your pursuits of Edmonton luxury. If you have any questions about luxury homes in Edmonton, or if you’re planning to sell a luxury home, get in touch with us. We’d love to have a conversation!

Living in Age-Friendly Edmonton

Age-friendly Edmonton

Our healthy and growing senior demographic is proof that we are an Age-friendly City.

The Paranych Luxury team is proud of our city. We think that our city offers people the perfect combination of community, energy, opportunity and compassion.

Our city’s ongoing commitment to all people was made clear with the Edmonton Seniors Declaration back in 2010, when the World Health Organization (WHO) officially made Edmonton an Age Friendly City. In our Declaration, it states that:

Individuals are respected regardless of age. All generations have much to teach and learn from each other.
Older people have ready access to programs, employment, activities and services that help them stay engaged, respected and appreciated.
Age is a gift to the city. We will value all the individuals who bring it to us.

Our city has benefitted from the vision of our seniors today and current leaders, volunteers and citizens work to ensure that seniors receive the support they need.

The city recognizes that as more families and newcomers arrive in Edmonton, the senior population grows. In fact, according to this report, Edmonton’s senior population is expected to grow from 13% to 20% over the next 10 years.

Our city is responding to this growth by working closely with senior groups and centres around Edmonton to ensure that they have the support they need to thrive.

There are specific cultural and multicultural support groups, lifestyle groups and senior programs available for people who are settling into our great city.

Below is a short list of some of the many support services and groups available to seniors. We’ve marked the areas of the city these centres are located, as well as the local phone numbers.

Add An Elevated Flair To Your Luxury Home

Do you want to add a special touch to your Edmonton Luxury property? One of the ways you can make a bold and unique statement is through your staircase. Years ago homeowners used staircases to connect the different floors of a property. Modern Luxury homeowners take advantage of their staircases and use them as a sculpture in their Edmonton homes. They add beautiful architectural details and artistic colours to enhance their Luxury properties.

The Edmonton Journal published an article with custom-made Luxury staircases found in Edmonton homes. Descriptions of their favourite work can be found below. If you’re thinking about renovating your Luxury home’s staircase, browse through the article images for inspiration.

Why we like it: The shapely underside of this graciously twisted centrepiece is as lovely as its cherrywood treads on the working side.
The builder: Stellar Homes Inc. is a small-volume builder of one-of-a-kind custom homes and acreage estate homes in Edmonton, Spruce Grove and Stony Plain.

Why we like it: A restrained use of timber, wood treads, steel stringers and glass railing create unity in juxtaposed materials.
The builder: Habitat Studio & Workshop was founded in 1992 and now has 23 employee-shareholders. It builds 18-20 projects per year and has a reputation for creating not only unique staircases but also energy-efficient homes.” Click here to read the full article.

Finding The Right Luxury Edmonton Community

Friday, July 19th, 2013

One of the most common challenges for Edmontonians looking to Buy A Luxury Property is choosing the right Edmonton neighbourhood. Finding the best community to live in is key- especially if you plan on raising your family there. As you’ve surely heard before…when it comes to real estate, its all about location!
So how do you find the right community to call home?

Luxury Edmonton CommunitiesRead our tips below to learn more!

    1. What matters most to you. Start with making a list of what is most important to your family. Do you want to be in walking distance of your job? Does an active neighbourhood crime watch matter to you? The most important things are what should go at the very top of your list.
    2. Think of choosing your neighbourhood like choosing a friend. All Edmonton communities have character, they have their own defining features and personality traits. Look at all the community’s traits and how it compares with yours. Do you enjoy dining out? If so, check that there are nearby restaurants with a wide range of dining options. Do you lead an active lifestyle? If so, check if the neighbourhood has any local fitness clubs or groups you can join. Feel free to sign up and use that as a fun way to meet other residents.
    3. Talk to the locals. Take a drive or walk down the streets during the day. Are there many people out on the street? Do you see any children playing? Do adults make eye contact or smile? Try striking up a non-invasive conversation with a couple of people. How they respond to you can paint a clearer picture of what your neighbours could be like. Don’t be afraid to mention you are looking to move to the area, ask them questions about local schools or playgrounds.

Rest assured the Paranych team will work with you to find the right Edmonton luxury home, in the best community which suits your needs and lifestyle. On our team we have a group of professional agents with excellent neighbourhood knowledge. If you are looking to buy an Edmonton Luxury Home and any questions, contact the Paranych team today.
